A letter to our future Product Designer

Job descriptions don’t always tell the full story. This one deserves a letter.
Hi there,

If you are looking for a calm, low-sync job where things move slowly, priorities rarely change, and designs are neatly scoped weeks in advance, this is probably not the role for you.

This is not a “chill” design role.

At Modak, we move fast. We collaborate in real time. We jump on calls often to unblock things, make decisions, and keep momentum. Being present and responsive during working hours matters, because we build together, live.

If that sounds stressful rather than exciting, it is okay to stop here.

If not, keep reading.

My name is Delfi, and I am a Product Designer at Modak.

Our mission is simple and ambitious: help kids reach their full potential. We do that by building a fintech product that teaches kids and teens healthy money habits, together with their parents. We care deeply about education, trust, and creating experiences that feel empowering, not intimidating or boring.

You will be the second Product Designer on the team, working closely with me and with product and engineering teams. That means speed, ownership, and impact. There is very little “design for the sake of design” here. Almost everything we work on ships, gets tested, or turns into learning within days.

How we work and make decisions

We make decisions quickly and collaboratively.

Design, product, and engineering work closely together, and tradeoffs are part of daily work. You will be expected to voice your opinion, listen to others, and commit once a direction is chosen.

Speed, for us, does not mean chaos or burnout. It means focus, clarity, and strong collaboration. We care about moving fast in a way that is sustainable for the team.

What makes this role exciting

You will work at the intersection of finance, education, and play, designing for two very different audiences:

👉 Kids and teens who need clarity, motivation, and fun

👉 Parents who need trust, safety, and transparency

Your work will directly impact how kids build confidence, autonomy, and responsibility. Helping kids reach their full potential is not a tagline for us, it is a design challenge we think about every day.

You will influence real product decisions. Your work will shape onboarding, rewards, cards, referrals, learning experiences, and features we have not even announced yet.

There is room to grow here. In ownership, in impact, and in how deeply you understand product.

This role is not for everyone

I want to be very honest upfront.

This is not a junior role. We are looking for a mid-level Product Designer with 3+ years of experience, and we need to see that experience clearly reflected in your portfolio.

You will not have someone breaking problems down for you or handing you fully defined tasks. You will be expected to own problems end to end, from understanding the context to proposing and validating solutions.

We aim for high quality, always. At the same time, we do not wait for perfection to start learning.

If you need long timelines, rigid scopes, or a very structured environment, this role will likely feel overwhelming.

A true generalist product design role

This role goes well beyond UI.As a Product Designer at Modak, you will:

● Design end-to-end product experiences, not just screens

● Think in flows, systems, and edge cases

● Collaborate daily with product, engineering, growth, and operations

● Help QA features by testing flows and catching issues before release

● Participate in research through interviews and surveys

● Review user feedback and app reviews across different platforms

● Explore how AI can help us move faster, work smarter, and unlock bigger ideas

You will switch contexts often. One day you might be deep in Figma refining a flow. The next day you might be analyzing feedback, jumping on user calls, or testing an experiment.

If you enjoy variety, ownership, and learning across disciplines, you will thrive here.

What we are looking for

We are looking for someone who:

✦ Has 3+ years of product design experience

✦ Can show real, shipped work in their portfolio

✦ Thinks beyond UI and understands behavior, tradeoffs, and systems

✦ Is comfortable with speed, responsibility, and ambiguity

✦ Can explain their thinking clearly, not just present polished screens

✦ Enjoys collaboration and real-time problem solving

✦ Is comfortable communicating in English and Spanish

Experience in fintech, consumer apps, or education products is a plus, but strong fundamentals and curiosity matter more.

About the hiring process

I also want to be transparent here.

Our hiring process is challenging on purpose. This role matters a lot to us. You can expect thoughtful conversations, portfolio reviews, and exercises that reflect real work, not trick questions.

I know this takes time and effort, and I genuinely appreciate it.

One last thing

Modak is not trying to be everything to everyone. This role is the same.

👉 If you read this and felt excited, a little nervous, but motivated, that is a good sign.

👉 If you read this and felt exhausted already, that is also okay. It just means this is probably not the right fit.

👉 If you believe design can help kids reach their full potential and you want to build something meaningful, fast, and with high quality, we would love to meet you.
